AN EARLY CARVED AND POLYCHROMED FIGURE OF ST. ROCH…..THE PATRON SAINT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES , WHO HIMSELF IS REPUTED TO HAVE SUFFERED WITH THE PLAGUE , WITHDREW TO THE FOREST AND WAS SAVED BY A DOG WHO BROUGHT HIM BREAD DAILY .

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE ROLLED DOWN STOCKING IS TO REVEAL A BIRTH MARK WHICH PROVED HIS IDENTITY ON RETURNING TO HIS FOLLOWERS .

THE DOG IS NORMALLY FEATURED WITH HIM BUT IS MISSING HERE .
