GOTHIC WINDSOR CHAIRS , ALTHOUGH NOW QUITE RARE , WERE VERY FASHIONABLE IN THE FIRST HALF AND ON INTO THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY , OWING MUCH OF THEIR STYLE TO THE GOTHIC REVIVAL PRIOR TO THIS PERIOD .

GOTHIC WINDSOR CHAIRS CHARACTERISTICALLY HAVE A TOP BOW MADE IN TWO PARTS WHICH ARE JOINED TO FORM THE POINTED ARCH , EPITOMISED IN THE GOTHIC TRACERY WINDOWS FOUND IN THE HOUSE OF HORACE WALPOLE ( 1717 – 1797 )

GOTHIC SPLAT CHAIRS MADE IN LONDON AND THE THAMES VALLEY WERE CONSIDERED THE BEST SEATING FURNITURE MADE IN PRIZED YEW WOOD WITH ELM SEATS AND ASH OR CHERRY LEGS , AS WITH THESE EXAMPLES HERE .
